Animal Otley Run

Marko's residence did an Otley Run last week, so Paul and I tagged along.
The theme was Noah's Ark, meaning that there was a large group of animals and bearded man roaming though the streets of Headingley and Leeds.
I was a lady bug, Paul was a shark, and Marko was a kangaroo.

Kangroo or Pikachu?

Some of the animals decided to play some basketball - Farm Animals vs. Exotic Animals.
The Exotic Animals won due to the advantages of height and hopping skills inherent to giraffes and kangaroos.

Shark attack!

Steph the Groupie

On Thursday a bunch of went to see Bedouin Soundclash!!!
The concert was AMAZING!
We were RIGHT at the front and I felt like such a groupie, oogling at Jay the whole night.

Aaand, the best part of the night?
I got to meet the band!!!

(It was technically my second time meeting them, but that was a couple of years ago and they didn't remember me (I'm not surprised), so it was like meeting them all over again!)

Paul and I went really early - like 15 minutes before the doors opened (which isn't really that early, but just seemed early because there was no one else there).
We were loitering around trying to decide which door to wait at when I spotted them walking down the street...
"Paul! Oh my god! That's them!! That's them right there!!"
"Go talk to them!"
"What?! Now?! But..."
"Go!"
And then he pushed me and I awkwardly ran after them going "Hey! Hey!"
They turned around and I talked to them for a little about how they played at Crofton and how I'm from Vancouver but in Leeds on an exchange and other chitchat.
Paul stayed back while I ran up to them, but then came over and talked to them too.
They were SO cool and super nice.
Ahhh!

I was so proud of myself for running after them!
And for going early - see, being crazy about punctuality does pay off!

Anyway, the concert was SO good.
They were really great live, it was such a fun night :)

A Date!

Today Paul and I went on a date!
We went to Casa Mia, an Italian restaurant located not too far from campus.
We decided to go there because (a) we like Italian food, and (b) we got a 2-for-1 coupon from a bag of chips - yay! for coupons!

I had suuuper good fettucini with mushroom cream sauce - mmm...cream sauce...
And Paul had spaghetti and meatballs.
And, since we had our handy dandy coupon, we figured we'd get dessert as well.
I had a lemon tart, which was a bit custardy, making it even better in my books, and Paul had tiramisu.

I didn't take any pictures because I wasn't planning on blogging about our meal.
But then I got bored of studying and decided I would do something other than look at food blogs.

So, since I didn't take any photos, I thought I would draw you a picture instead...

Om nom nom nom nom.

Jamie's Italian

To continue with the birthday festivities, Paul and I went for dinner at Jamie's Italian last night!
I tried to take photos of my food (how Asian of me, I know), but they didn't turn out that well - sorry!

The restaurant is in a beautiful old building that was once a bank.
While waiting to be seated, I got to watch the chefs work their magic through the open kitchen located next to the bar. It was like watching live Food Network with the boss (not Jamie, unfortunately) shouting orders at the cooks and inspecting the food before letting it go out to the tables.
I also got really hungry while waiting, and even more indecisive about what I wanted to order.

We got a cozy booth in a corner of the restaurant, which was really nice.

So, the food!
The food was super good. Suuuper good.
We had...

Crispy Squid with Garlicky Mayo
Prawn Linguine
Turbo Fusilli Arrabiata

We also had Tiramisu and a slice of Baked Walnut Tart for dessert, but those photos really didn't turned out well, so you'll just have to imagine what they looked like.

I definitely want to go back to Jamie's.
Maybe for some Bucatini Carbonara or Monachelle Puttanesca or Wild Truffle Tagliatelle...or all three...

My Birthday!

My birthday coincided perfectly with the Ellerslie End of Term Cocktail Party.
So, here I am celebrating my 21st birthday all dolled up with my hallmates :)

I had a great birthday, thanks for all the birthday love everyone! :)

Aaandy!

On Wednesday, Paul and I went to see Andy McKee!
Andy McKee is a guitarist that does all that crazy tapping and finger picking stuff. He's from Kansas and became famous through YouTube - don't hold that against him.

He was amazing!
It was crazy how just one instrument could simultaneously produce so many different types of sounds.
My favourite songs were Africa and Rylynn.

Andy's guitars!

In addition to being a fantastic guitarist, Andy was super funny and nice and seemed like someone you'd want to be friends with.
At the end of the show he invited everyone to stick around and talk to him, so Paul and I got to meet him!

Look, it's us and Andy!
(I look a little turtle-y, but that's okay because I'm next to Andy.)

Yay! Aaandy!

The Otley Run

Yesterday, I experienced by first Otley Run.
The Otley Run is a pretty famous event in Leeds.
It even has its own Wikipedia page.
It's a pub crawl with 18 pubs.
The crawl starts in Headingley, a nearby town, and ends in the City Centre.

My residence was doing the Otley Run and the theme was Pub Snooker.
This meant that...

1. You had to dress up.
Boys as snooker players, bow tie and waistcoat, and girls as snooker balls, a uni-coloured outfit.
I went as the black ball - original, I know.

2. There were different points for different drinks depending on which pub you were at.
For example, at a "coloured" pub, you could choose from a long list of "coloured" drinks, but to get the most points you would choose a Guinness, Scrumpy or Brown Ale for 7 points.
I didn't score very high at any of the "coloured" pubs...

3. For extra points, you could do silly tasks.

Like, tie yourself to your partner...

Or, take a picture with a stranger...

These girls were part of a big flock of sheep, their costumes were quite something!
We also saw old school rugby players with afro wigs, babies, cowboys and cows, and a guy in a suit with a deer mask (I have no idea what that was about).

I didn't complete the Otley Run, I left after the thirteenth pub.
(No, I didn't have a drink at every pub - too expensive and too mean to my poor liver).
But Marko may or may not have been the winner - the Umpire (the dapper fellow in the full suit) has yet to make his decision.

Silent Disco Geeks

Last night, Marko, Yannish and I - Paul was going to come too, but he got sick :( - went to a Silent Disco at the Union.
I'd never been to a Silent Disco before, it was SO cool!

In case you don't know what a Silent Disco is...
You're given a pair of headphones that have controls for volume, Station A or Station B. And there are two DJs, so you can choose which DJ you want to listen to - A or B.

Why was the Silent Disco so cool?
1. You had a choice of what song you wanted to listen to.
2. You could (sort of) have a conversation with someone else.
3. It was cool to look around and see people clearly dancing to two very different types of music even though they were in the same room.
4. When you took off your headphones you could hear everyone singing (or in some cases screaming) along to the music, but without the actual music.
5. They played "I Just Can't Wait to Be King" from the Lion King.
6. The theme was Geek, look at us all dressed up!

Oh, and to explain our matching glasses, they were giving them out at the door.
So the three of us were matching...with hundreds of other people.

And just because this was by far the best photo of the whole night:
